This article presents an overview of parent management training for preschoolers with aggressive and oppositional behaviors.
Abstract
Parent management training (PMT) refers to treatment procedures in which parents are trained to alter their child's behavior at home. PMT programs attempt to replace permissive, harsh, and inconsistent discipline styles with effective behavior management strategies. PMT programs begin with an assessment of symptoms and current functioning, with continued monitoring of these symptoms throughout treatment. This article presents assessment strategies and basic concepts of PMT and highlights theoretical underpinnings and research outcomes for some variations of PMT programs. The demonstrated efficacy of PMT programs in treating disruptive behavior disorders in young children suggests that parent involvement in treatment programs should not be optional. References
