This annual report presents information on the activities and accomplishments of the Hawai'i County Police Department for Fiscal Year 2007-2008.
Abstract
Highlights of the annual report include: 1) the Hawai'i Police Department's new Police Cadet Program officially began in October 2007; 2) the department purchased an armored tactical vehicle, 18 new marked blue and whites, and equipped 6 unmarked police cars with special equipment; 3) the community policing philosophy continues to be embraced with 35 authorized positions at the end of Fiscal Year 2007-2008; 4) in December 2007, the Records and Identification Section became current with cases being deferred to the prosecutor's office of criminal prosecution; 5) the Hamakua District created Crime Reduction Units to control and eliminate various offenses at parks and community functions; 6) in the South Hilo District, the Aggressive Driving Enforcement Program has contributed to the sharp decline in major traffic accidents; 7) during 2007-2008, the North Kohala District saw a drop in the number of reported burglaries and thefts; 8) the Traffic Enforcement Unit investigated 31 fatal crashes that resulted in 33 people killed; 9) several grants were funded by State or Federal agencies during Fiscal Year 2007-2008 in areas such as community based traffic coordinator, DATA grant, gang prevention (East and West Hawaii, Hawai'i Narcotics Task Force; sexual assault forensic examiner, statewide marijuana eradication, traffic investigations, and youth deterrence; and 10) the budget for Fiscal Year 2007-2008 in the way of straight salaries and wages totaled $28,146,750.
