This review of 13 relevant studies shows that compared with students not participating in such programs, participating students improved their knowledge and attitudes toward dating violence; however, the diversity of findings from individual studies makes it difficult to generalize beyond the results from specific programs, and the proportion of variance in changes in knowledge and attitudes was moderate and relatively small. A variety of contents were used in dating violence prevention programs. The professional literature on preventive interventions/programs in schools indicates the importance of engaging high school students in mentoring programs that address healthy sexuality and dating relationships and helping parents identify and address social and cultural influences that may promote abusive attitudes and violent behaviors in their children. Other recommended topics for such programs are the debunking of myths concerning date rape and the development of students' skills and attitudes that protect against date rape. Also important in countering violent behavior in dating relationships is learning how to deal with issues of jealousy, rejection, and alcohol/drugs. Definitions of abuse and sexual coercion in dating relationships should also be addressed. Discussion, role playing, and other innovative instructional techniques can help students develop strategies and assertiveness skills for countering aggression in dating relationships. This article lists the research databases reviewed and outlines the criteria used for selecting research studies. A score of effect size was computed for each study. 2 tables and 31 references
