Ten DVDs provide instruction and resource materials for a 36-hour course for groups of new corrections supervisors that will enable them to assess their personal competencies and develop a personal "supervisory development plan" (SDP).
Abstract
The format for the instructional DVDs consists of the guidance of instructors who interact with an in-studio group of corrections professionals who have varying levels of experience in corrections and as corrections supervisors. The intent of the instructional format is for the viewers of the DVD to assemble in small groups and emulate what the instructor is asking the in-studio learning group to do on the DVD. Appropriate pauses are interspersed throughout each DVD as the viewing group duplicates what the in-studio group is doing. The objectives of the course are to guide each participant in an assessment of his/her personal professional competencies as a corrections supervisor; to examine the role of a supervisor in the context of his/her organization's mission, culture, and stakeholders; and to assess and develop personal and professional goals as a corrections supervisor. The final outcome of the training is the development of an SDP that applies to each participant's workplace. Using this general format, the learning modules address "Personal Competencies," "Effective Communication," "Problem-solving," "Conflict Management," "Encouraging Performance," "Organizational Context and Maze," and the "Supervisory Development Plan." Two of the modules provide visual aids and vignettes for various modules. Other materials that accompany the DVDs are a Participant Guide, a Learning Journal, and a booklet for the participant's SDP.
