This guide provides information for jail administrators and other corrections professionals on planning and implementing inmate programs and activities. Inmate programs fall into three categories: activity-focused programs aimed at keeping inmates busy while they are in custody; reformative programs that provide inmates with knowledge and skills to address personal needs; and reintegration programs that are intended to prepare inmates for their return to the community as productive citizens. This guide is divided into four chapter that present information and guidance on planning and implementing inmate programs. Chapter 1 discusses the value of keeping jail inmates productively occupied. Chapter 2 presents information on the administrator's role in supporting inmate programs and activities. Chapter 3 provides information on planning, implementing, and evaluating inmate activities and programs, and Chapter 4 contains information on inmate activities and programs that have been successfully used at correctional facilities across the country.
