This guidebook provides a perspective and resources for enhancing home, community, and school collaboration as part of comprehensive safe school and school improvement planning.
Abstract
To assist schools in their safety efforts, the Hamilton Fish Institute on School and Community Violence and the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory with support from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) revised a series of guidebooks. The guidebooks are intended to build a foundation of information to assist schools and school districts in developing safe learning environments. The guidebooks provide local school districts with information and resources that support comprehensive safe school planning efforts. This guidebook provides an overview of the nature and scope of collaboration, explores barriers to effectively working together, and discusses the processes of establishing and sustaining the work. It also reviews the importance of using data, issues related to sharing information, and examples of collaborative efforts from around the country. Effective family-community-school collaboration requires a cohesive set of policies. Cohesive policy will only emerge if current policies are revisited to reduce redundancy and redeploy school and community resources that are used ineffectively. The necessary components for cohesive policy are outlined. Figures, appendixes A-F, references, and resources
