Findings show that projected admissions could be derived by separately projecting felony probation placements, direct court prison commitments, and felony probation and parole revocation to prison. The methodology gives the forecaster the tools to project total admissions to prison and new felony probation placements. The next step in the process is to prepare the projected total admissions to be entered to calculate the prison population. This process involves establishing sentence length and offense types. That methodology is not discussed in this article, but will be discussed in a future article, as well as projecting prison releases, parole, probation, and prison populations. Projecting prison admissions and ultimately correctional populations serves as a planning guide for policymakers and practitioners to best decide where limited resources should be applied.
