Since the mid-1990s, people have been able to obtain 'burglary prevention advice' in Belgium, which means that a burglary prevention adviser will carry out a free assessment of the dwelling regarding protection against a burglary. However, not only are there indications that this service is little known by the Belgian population, but the results of a large-scale survey of citizens who have received such advice also suggest that certain groups in society, namely, the lower educated, tenants and apartment dwellers, are insufficiently aware to call upon these advisers. Nevertheless, the respondents are highly satisfied with the given advice and the majority report that they have partially or completely carried out the proposed prevention measures.
