Abstract
This guide, from the Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services, was developed through the work of the Family Violence Prevention Center and the Family Violence Prevention Center Advisory Council. The Advisory Council consists of criminal justice experts from around the State who work on issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking issues. The guide is specifically designed for use by victim advocates who have been working in the field for 5 years or less. The guide is divided into five chapters that provide information on the following topics: 1) what is advocacy?; 2) national and State codes of conduct for victim advocates; 3) unauthorized practice of law in domestic violence cases; 4) picking your battles - helpful tips for new advocates; 5) legal remedies for crime victims; 6) safety planning tools for crime victims; and 7) emerging issues such as cybercrime, human trafficking, and teen dating violence. The guide is intended for use by victim advocates in developing healthy coping and advocacy skills and utilizing effective and proven practices for assisting victims of crime.
