Major findings from this Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS) Report include: adolescents and children referred to substance abuse treatment by school systems were more likely than those referred by the criminal justice system to report primary alcohol abuse but less likely to report primary marijuana abuse; children and adolescents referred to substance abuse treatment for the first time were more likely to be referred by the school system as opposed to the criminal justice system; and adolescents and children referred to treatment by the school system were less likely to complete treatment than those referred by the criminal justice system. Data for this report came from TEDS, a compilation of data on the demographic characteristics and substance abuse problems of those admitted for substance abuse treatment. Information in this report is provided on demographic characteristics of children and adolescents admitted for treatment, types of substances abused, characteristics of treatment provided to patients, and geographic differences noted in referral patterns. Findings from this report show that school employees are well positioned to provide early identification of students with substance abuse problems and to intervene and refer them to the appropriate care.
