The Nebraska Crime Victim's Reparations Act was enacted by the Nebraska Legislature and signed into law on January 1, 1979. The purpose of the program is to assist innocent victims of crime with medical expenses, mental health counseling, loss of wages, funeral bills in cases of homicide, residential crime scene clean-up, loss of earning power, and other expenses directly related to the criminal act. A maximum of $10,000 may be awarded to each claimant, and eligible awards may be reduced by the receipt of any collateral sources received or to be received, such as insurance, sick leave pay, or workers' compensation. This report details the funding and outlays for the program for fiscal years July 1, 2008 - June 30, 2009 and July 1, 2009 - June 30, 2010. Data for both fiscal years provided in the report include a breakdown of claims by legislative district and a breakdown of awards by expenses and type of crime.
