This is the video and transcript of an interview with David Sklansky - professor of Law and Faculty Chair at the University of California (Berkeley) - at the 2010 NIJ Conference that focuses on the meaningful, but as yet, incomplete application of the full implications of the community policing concept.
Abstract
Sklansky argues that community-policing advocates have not fully applied the implications of community policing regarding partnerships between the police and all segments of the community. The tendency has been for police to limit their partnerships with those aspects of the community that are already involved in community leadership positions, but who may not have ties to other segments of the community where vocal, aggressive, and consistent leadership is lacking. In addition, the application of the community policing concept has not been fully integrated into the job tasks of all police units, particularly frontline officers who interact daily with all segments of the community.
