This report provides information for use in preventing the spread of HIV infection among adolescent alcohol and other drug (AOD) users.
Abstract
This report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Substance Abuse Prevention, is intended for use by prevention and drug treatment practitioners to prevent the spread of HIV among adolescent and other drug (AOD) users. The report present background information on the rate of HIV infection among adolescents; and a list of risk factors for adolescents that include unsafe sexual practices, alcohol and other drug use, interpersonal and biological factors, and a lack of awareness about the disease. A discussion is presented on adolescents at increased risk for HIV infection: ethnic/racial youth, adolescent homosexual/bisexual males, adolescent females, runaway and homeless youth, delinquent and incarcerated youth, and sexually abused youth. A section of the report discusses how prevention and treatment practitioners can develop and implement an HIV infection prevention program for teen and adolescent AOD users. Steps for developing and implementing a program include defining goals, assessing needs, involving community lenders and opinion-makers, promoting collaboration, and using available national resources. The final section of the report presents strategies for working effectively with adolescents and the community at large to develop successful intervention and prevention programs.
