The report focuses on the more serious offenses (Part I crimes) reported to the State UCR program by the State's law enforcement agencies for calendar year 2009. Also included is an overview of the less serious offenses (Part II crimes), a well as statistics on arrests and recovered property. There were a total of 189,857 crimes reported to the UCR program in 2009, a 6-percent decrease from 2008. The crime rate for the State was 4,032.0 per 100,000 inhabitants. The daily average for Part I offenses reported was 520. The total property value stolen in 2009 was $126,561,931; 12 percent of this amount was recovered. A total of 249 law enforcement officers were assaulted in 2009. On average, less than one officer was assaulted per day in 2009; 59 percent received serious injuries, and 41 percent received minimal or no injuries. The total number of crimes, the number of clearances, and the clearance rate are shown for each of the years 2005-2009, and the average of these figures is shown for the period 2005-2009. In addition to the total number of crimes for these years, data are presented on the number of property, violent, homicide, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle offenses for each of the years. There were 36,666 clearances in 2009, representing a clearance rate of 19 percent. A total of 33,111 persons were arrested for Part I offenses; Part I arrests composed 15 percent of all arrests in Alabama in 2009. A total of 185,586 persons were arrested for Part II offenses.
