The report indicates that over the past 10 years the overall rate of Index crimes per 100,000 residents declined 26 percent; the rate of violent crimes (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) declined 30 percent; and property crimes (burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft) showed a 24-percent decline. The largest reductions in crime rates were reported for motor vehicle theft, robbery, and burglary. New York State has also experienced a significant reduction in the actual number of crimes reported. The number of major crimes reported to law enforcement agencies fell each year after 2000, reaching the lowest levels ever recorded in 2007 before increasing slightly in 2008 and then declining again in 2009. There were 136,619 fewer crimes reported in 2009 than in 2000, even as the population of the State increased by half a million. Trends are reported for regional crime for 2000 to 2009 and trends in violent crimes by firearm for 2000 to 2009.
