This report on crime in Tennessee for 2009 is based on data received from law enforcement agencies (reported crimes) under the Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System (TIBRS), which is the State's version of the FBI's National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS)that views a crime and all of its components as an "incident," which includes details about the offense, victim, offender, property, arrestees, and the relationship between the people involved.
Abstract
A total of 597,748 Group A offenses were reported for 2009, a 4.5-percent decrease over 2008; 59.5 percent of the reported crimes were against property; 28.3 percent were crimes against persons; and 12.2 percent were "crimes against society," including drug offenses. Group A offenses were cleared by arrest or exceptional means 35.5 percent of the time. The crime rate per 100,000 for Group A offenses was 9,618.0, and the total arrest rate per 100,000 was 5,879.5. Juveniles composed 13.1 percent of the total arrests. Domestic-violence offenses represented 50.3 percent of all crimes against persons. The number of persons arrested for a Group A offense was 166,918. A total of 27,635 persons were arrested for driving under the influence (DUI), including 147 juveniles. Reported wire fraud increased 19 percent, and reported offenses involving pornography/obscene materials increased 62.2 percent. Reported embezzlement decreased 34.2 percent, and reported motor vehicle theft decreased 22 percent. Extensive tabular and graphic data
