There were 130 domestic homicides in New York State in 2009, a 12-percent decrease from 2008. An intimate partner was the perpetrator in 89 domestic homicides, a 2-percent decline from 2008. Females were the victims in 76 percent of the 89 intimate-partner homicides reported to police in 2009. The perpetrators committed suicide in 15 (16.9 percent) intimate-partner homicides. In the murder-suicide cases, all victims were female and all perpetrators were male. In 2009, 17 domestic homicides involved minor child victims, a 45-percent decline from 2008. In five of these child homicides, the parent's intimate partner was the perpetrator. Knives/cutting/blunt instruments were used in 50 percent of domestic homicides, and firearms were used in 25 percent of the cases. Domestic homicide victims were White in 53.8 percent of the cases, and 44.6 percent were persons of color. New York City reported more Black domestic-homicide victims (51 percent) than White victims (41.4 percent). Of the 130 domestic homicide victims across the State, 19.2 percent were reported to be Hispanic. Intimate-partner victims statewide had a median age of 38; however, in New York City, both male and female victims tended to be slightly older (median age of 41). 11 tables and 2 figures
