Highlights from this report include: 1) in 2008, there were 375 reports of rape in Maine, an increase of 57 percent from 1999; 2) the rape offense rate for 2008 was 28/100,000 population, an increase of 49 percent from the 1999 rate; 3) since 2004, Maine's forcible rape offense rate has increased 19 percent, compared to decreases in the neighboring States of New Hampshire and Vermont; 4) from 1999 and 2008, Maine's sex offense arrest rate fluctuated between 20 and 25 per 100,000 population; 5) sex offenders had higher return rates to prison for repeated sex offenses than other offenders; and 6) sex offenders on probation had lower rates of re-arrest for a new crime than other offenders at 1, 2, and 3 years after admission to probation. This report from the Maine Statistical Analysis Center presents information on sexual assault trends and sex offender recidivism in Maine. Data on sexual assault trends are presented for the years 1999 through 2008, while sex offender recidivism data are presented for the years 2004 through 2008. Data for this report were obtained from Maine's Uniform Crime Reports, and incarceration, probation, and recidivism statistics compiled by the Maine Department of Corrections.
