Major findings from the report include: there were 152,995 traffic crashes in Missouri in 2009 with an estimated economic loss of $3,318,707,000; 24.2 percent of the crashes involved no deaths but at least one injury; 878 persons were killed in traffic crashes in 2009 and 53,829 persons were injured; speed was a significant contributing factor, with 17.8 percent of the crashes being speed related; for all fatal crashes, 41.1 percent were speed related, while 30.1 percent involved a person drinking; and age was also found to be a contributing factor, with 27.3 percent of crashes involving one or more drivers under the age of 21, and 31.2 percent of crashes involving a driver over the age of 55. This report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol contains a compilation of statistics related to traffic crashes in the State for the year 2009. The intent of the report is to provide State and local authorities with information on Missouri's traffic crash problems. Data for the report were obtained primarily from the Statewide Traffic Accident Records System maintained by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The information in this report identifies causal factors and characteristics of traffic crashes in the State which directly affect the frequency of occurrence or personal death and injury severity levels. The report is used by local and State officials in their traffic safety planning processes and to acquire Federal grant funding support for traffic safety programs. Tables and figures
