The 3-day training program consists of six modules and one training session (presentation and delivery) for only those participants who will be training others to be trainers. Module 1 informs participants about the mission of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, which functions under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Module 2, entitled "Prevention and Parenting Theory and Research," presents the basic principles of the prevention of the misuse of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs, along with the link between these prevention principles and parenting. This module will also impart knowledge of the theory and research that pertains to the influence of parent, family, and extended family on the adolescent's later drug-taking behavior. Module 3, "Parenting Programming Types and Strategies," reviews the history of the parent movement and parenting education; and it explains the six strategies of prevention (pyramid) and how different types of parenting education programs can fit into a comprehensive prevention program. Instruction also covers various types of existing parenting curricula, materials, and resource organizations available to parents. Guidance is provided on the criteria to be used in the selection of the material, curricula, and resource organizations that participants will use in the training and support of parent groups. The remaining three modules focus on starting and maintaining parent programs, parenting resource development and accessibility issues, and action planning for parenting programs.
