The brochure advises that expressions of concern or offers to help such a friend will likely meet with a denial that the drug or alcohol use is a problem and that it can be managed personally without the involvement of adults or peers. Efforts to help should continue, however, including regular reminders of the potential consequences of continued alcohol or drug use, such as getting arrested, losing his/her driver's license, getting suspended from school, overdosing, becoming addicted, or possibly becoming involved in an alcohol-related vehicle accident. The brochure also lists some signs that alcohol or drug use is becoming a problem, such as using drugs or alcohol as an essential element of having a good time or coping with daily life; hanging out with new friends who support rather than challenge drug or alcohol use; losing interest in activities he/she once enjoyed; and having difficulty in interacting with and caring about family and friends.
