This technical assistance bulletin from the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges discusses 16 strategies for ensuring continued use of evidence-based practices in juvenile drug courts.
Abstract
The 16 strategies discussed in this bulletin were built from evidence-based and promising practices used in juvenile drug courts. The strategies should be considered as an important road map for court officials to use in strengthening and maintaining juvenile drug court programs and practices. The 16 strategies are: 1) collaborative planning among all stakeholders; 2) team work among all operational team members; 3) having clearly defined target population and eligibility criteria; 4) having judicial involvement and supervision in juvenile drug courts; 5) ongoing monitoring and evaluation of programs; 6) establishing community partnerships; 7) instituting comprehensive treatment planning; 8) instituting developmentally appropriate services; 9) instituting gender-appropriate services; 10) having a culturally competent juvenile drug court; 11) focusing on strengths of program youth and their families; 12) encouraging family engagement with the court; 13) developing strong educational links with schools and other programs in the community; 14) using drug testing in an effective manner; 15) having goal-oriented incentives and sanctions for participants; and 16) having strong confidentiality procedures for court staff members.
