Abstract
Major findings from this report include: between 1973 and late-2010, the leading States for sentencing women to death were California, Texas, Florida, and North Carolina; as of October 31, 2010, California had 16 women on death row and Texas had 10; Virginia was the last State to execute a female offender in September 2005; of the women currently on death row, 14 killed their husbands or boyfriends, 11 killed their children, and 1 killed both her husband and her children; and since 1973, a total of 167 death sentences have been imposed on female offenders, accounting for 2 percent of all death sentences during this time period. This report presents data on the number of female offenders who received death sentences during the period January 1, 1973 through October 31, 2010. Information is provided on female offenders currently under death sentences; it excludes those for whom the death sentence has been legally reversed or removed even if the case is still being reviewed or reconsidered.
