This is a report on the provisional agenda and annotations of the fourth session of the United Nations (U.N.) Conference of the States Parties to the U.N. Convention Against Corruption, whose purpose is to review the implementation of the provisions of the Convention, with attention to the criminalization of public corruption, law enforcement responsibilities, and international cooperation.
Abstract
This fourth session was held October 24-28, 2011, in Marrakech, Morocco. The agenda first addresses "organizational matters," which pertain to the opening of the session, the election of officers, adoption of the agenda and organization of work, participation of observers, adoption of the report of the bureau on credentials, and general discussion. The latter agenda item allows time for high-level representatives to make statements on matters of a general nature related to the implementation of the Convention. Such discussion allows for more focused and interactive exchanges under the substantive items of the agenda. Following the completion of organizational matters, the Conference agenda reviews the implementation of the Convention by "States Parties." At this point in the agenda, the Conference will review matters undertaken in the Conference's first three sessions and the status of actions taken at these sessions. This is followed by an outline of matters that participants in the Conference's fourth session may wish to consider. Other items on the agenda address technical assistance provided to countries as they meet the challenges of implementing the Convention; issues in the prevention of corruption; asset recovery from those convicted of public corruption; any "other matters;" the provisional agenda for the fifth session; and adoption of the report on the proceedings of the fourth session.
