Highlights from this report indicate that for children in the District of Columbia in 2007, improvements were seen in vaccination rates for children ready for school; enrollment was up for Head Start, Early Head Start, Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten classes, and public charter schools; math scores and SAT math/reading scores improved; the number of mothers receiving adequate prenatal care increased; the number of children eligible and applying for Federal assistance declined; and the number of homeless youth in the District declined. The report also found that some markers of children's well-being worsened for 2007, specifically, the infant mortality rate increased, the number of juvenile cases referred to superior court increased across all categories; and the number of cases brought against parents in superior court for child abuse allegations increased. This report from the D.C. Kids Count Collaborative provides annual data on the well-being of children in the District of Columbia for the year 2007. The intent of the report is to provide a broad perspective on the status of children and young people in the District, and to educate the community on the issues affecting children and their families in the District. Recommendations and strategies for improving the well-being of children in the District are discussed. Figures and tables
