Abstract
Highlights from this report indicate that for children in the District of Columbia in 2008, improvements were seen in vaccination rates for children ready for school; enrollment was up for Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten classes, and public charter schools; math and reading scores for public and charter school students improved; the number of youth and children engage in meaningful activities increased; violent deaths for youth aged 15-19 decreased; the number of children eligible and applying for TANF and food stamps declined; and the number of children and youth in foster care declined. The report also found that some markers of children's well-being worsened for 2008, specifically, the infant mortality rate increased, the number of cases of sexually transmitted diseases in persons under age 20 increased; and the number of hotline calls for cases child physical abuse and child neglect increased. This report from the D.C. Kids Count Collaborative provides annual data on the well-being of children in the District of Columbia for the year 2008. The intent of the report is to provide a broad perspective on the status of children and young people in the District, and to educate the community on the issues affecting children and their families in the District. Recommendations and strategies for improving the well-being of children in the District are discussed. Figures and tables
