Highlights from this report indicate that for children in the District of Columbia in 2010, improvements were seen in vaccination rates for children ready for school; enrollment was up for Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten classes, public charter schools, and public schools overall; combined SAT math/reading scores improved; the percent of low birth weight infants declined; the number of children and youth in foster care declined; and the total number of petitions against juveniles declined. The report also found that some markers of children's well-being worsened for 2010, specifically, the infant mortality rate increased, the number of violent deaths for youth aged 15 to 19 increased; and the number of children applying for and eligible for Federal assistance increased. This report from the D.C. Kids Count Collaborative provides annual data on the well-being of children in the District of Columbia for the year 2010. The intent of the report is to provide a broad perspective on the status of children and young people in the District, and to educate the community on the issues affecting children and their families in the District. Recommendations and strategies for improving the well-being of children in the District are discussed. Figures and tables
