Abstract
This document presents updates to the 2004 standard for Portable Ballistic Protection for police officers in the United Kingdom. The 2004 standard was established to ensure ballistic shields and blankets supplied to police departments were manufactured to a consistent standard and that they would meet the operational requirement of the departments. This document contains the following updates to the 2004 standard: 1) standardization of test levels across blankets and shields to incorporate any new design s of portable ballistics protection; 2) introduction of new test levels; 3) manufacturers' quality testing to ensure continued quality throughout the process; 4) edge testing; and 5) multi-short testing. The new standard was developed in response to Home Office objectives of freeing up the police to fight crime more effectively and efficiently, and to protect citizens from terrorism.
