Basic facts from this fact sheet on mentoring include: in 2005, only 14 percent of the young people who could benefit from having a mentor were in formal, one-to-one mentoring relationships; most mentoring relationships last an average of 9 months; while only 16 percent of mentors had mentees in the juvenile justice system, 67 percent of mentors expressed a willingness to work with them; and since 1994, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) has provided more than $500 million to support juvenile and youth mentoring programs. This fact sheet from the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) presents an overview on the benefits of mentoring for juveniles and youth and efforts by OJP to promote it. Mentoring has been found to help promote developmental assets with juveniles and to combat youth violence and delinquency. Efforts by OJP to promote mentoring include support of the National Mentoring Month public service campaign, participating in the Federal Mentoring Council, and provision of funding to strengthen, expand, and implement youth mentoring activities and youth development programs throughout the country.
