Basic facts from this fact sheet regarding the problem of bullying include: a recent survey from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) indicates that 13.2 percent of participants reported being physically bullied in the previous year; 13 percent of 6th-10th grade students reported bullying while 6 percent reported being both bullies and victims; and 66 percent of bullying victims in middle and high school indicated that school professionals responded poorly to bullying problems. This fact sheet from the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) presents an overview on the problem of bullying and efforts by OJP to combat it. The report indicates that bullying is a common problem on school playgrounds and in neighborhoods throughout the country with the majority of bullies being male and victims being divided evenly between male and female. Current efforts by OJP to combat bullying include a Federal National Bullying Summit, development of a Webinar to serve as a free training tool for practitioners, and development of a five-bulletin series that summarizes findings of OJJDP-funded research on peer victimization in schools.
