Abstract: The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) conducted the first-ever National Former Prisoner Survey (NFPS) between January 2008 and October 2008. This study presents data on sexual victimization experienced by former State prisoners during their prior term of incarceration, including any time served in a local jail, State prison, or post-release community-correctional facility. Data are provided on the prevalence of sexual victimization while incarcerated, by the type of victimization, and sex of former inmate. The report also examines individual-level and facility-level characteristics that may be correlated with sexual victimization and describes the circumstances surrounding victimization. Details are provided on the post-release responses of victims to sexual victimization, HIV rates of victims, and information on current employment status, housing, and living arrangements. Data were collected from a total of 317 parole offices in 40 States who were randomly included in the survey sample. A total of 17,738 completed interviews from former State prisoners who were under active supervision (i.e., required to contact a supervisory parole authority regularly in person, by mail, or by telephone) participated in the national survey.
