Highlights from this report include the following: data from 2009 show that the percentage of recent and current cannabis users in the Netherlands is the same as the European average, and that cannabis use among school-age youth has continued to decline; the number of cannabis users seeking treatment for addiction continues to rise across all age groups; cocaine use is relatively common among youth and young adults being used in social settings as well as at home; after cannabis, ecstasy remains the most popular illegal drug used by juveniles and young adults; a slight decline was seen in alcohol and tobacco use among juveniles and adults, with the largest decline being seen in the 12-14 year-old age group; and smoking remained the main cause of premature death for people over aged 20. This report from the Netherlands National Drug Monitor office at the Trimbos Institute presents annual data on developments in substance use and drug-related criminality for 2010. Data are presented on usage for the following substances: cannabis; cocaine; opiates; ecstasy, amphetamine and related substances; GHB; alcohol; and tobacco.
