Abstract
A research review of PsycINFO and Medline databases for the period 2000 through 2010 was conducted to identify articles that included separate measures of emotional/psychological child maltreatment (ECM) and its psychometric properties. ECM has been identified as a major health problem that can have serious consequences for young people, such as increased emotional and behavioral problems. The review identified 144 articles that included a separate measure for ECM, and of those 144 articles, 45 contained 33 ECM measures that met the inclusion criteria for further study in that they addressed some aspects of the reliability and/or validity of the measures. The review tested the measures for their reliability and validity at assessing the problem of ECM, as well as the quality of the assessments. The review found that while the majority of the measures identified in the studies demonstrated acceptable reliability for measuring ECM, fewer measures included aspects for evaluating one or more types of validity. Implications for future research are discussed. Table and references
