Abstract
The D.A.R.E. + P.L.U.S. program is an extension of what children are taught in the basic D.A.R.E. program. The D.A.R.E. program is a police-officer-led series of classroom lessons that are taught to children from Kindergarten through 12th grade. The program not only provides drug prevention education, but it also teaches children good decision making skills that they will need to help them avoid high-risk behaviors. The D.A.R.E. + P.L.U.S. program is an extension of the classroom curriculum. The programs, currently operating in several areas across the country including Chicago, Los Angeles, and Houston, provide volunteers to work with latch-key kids and those from single family homes who come home to an empty house and may thus be more susceptible to participating in high-risk behavior.
