This report of the Secretariat of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime features a review of the technical assistance being provided to countries who have committed to the implementation of the Convention and its protocols.
Abstract
This report provides updates on the status of technical assistance activities provided by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). UNODC continues to pursue a strategic approach to the technical assistance it provides to countries through its thematic and regional programs, in order to counter organized crime and trafficking. The technical assistance includes the Global Program for Strengthening the Capacities of Member States to Prevent and Combat Organized and Serious Crime; the Global Program Against Money-Laundering, Proceeds of Crime, and the Financing of Terrorism; the Container Control Program; the Global Program Against Trafficking in Persons; the Global Program Against the Smuggling of Migrants; and the Global Program on Firearms. Details are also provided on technical assistance designed to strengthen international judicial cooperation to fight transnational organized crime. In addition, technical assistance has been offered to member states on strengthening criminal justice responses to organized crime. Improving law enforcement cooperation and inter-institutional coordination has been the focus on technical assistance under the West Africa Coast Initiative. The focus has been on law enforcement capacity-building, cross-border collaboration, and criminal justice reform at the national and regional levels. Technical assistance has been provided in the development of programs for the protection of witnesses and victims of organized crime, as well as in combating trafficking in persons. Details are provided on technical assistance intended to improve member state responses to the smuggling of migrants and trafficking in firearms.
