This report presents the recommendations and organization of the meeting of the United Nations Working Group on the Smuggling of Migrants (WGSM), which was held in Vienna May 30 - June 1, 2012.
Abstract
The WGSM was established by the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime in the course of implementing the Convention's Protocol Against the Smuggling of Migrants by Land, Sea, and Air. The WGSM is responsible for identifying and responding to the Convention parties' experiences and practices in implementing the Smuggling of Migrants Protocol. This report on the WGSM's meeting presents its recommendations for Convention parties regarding the criminalization, investigation, and prosecution of persons involved in the smuggling of migrants; the protection of and assistance to smuggled migrants; the prevention of migrant smuggling; international cooperation in countering migrant smuggling; and proposed areas for future work. Information on the organization of the meeting pertains to the activities at the opening of the meeting, the adoption of the agenda, attendance, and a listing of the documents addressed in the meeting.
