Abstract: This bulletin from the Bureau of Justice Statistics contains data on local government corrections expenditures for fiscal years (FY) 2005 through 2011. Highlights of the findings include the following: in FY2011, local governments spent $26.4 billion on corrections; between 2005 and 2011, the annual expenditures by local governments varied between $25.8 billion and $28.4 billion; corrections expenditures represented 1.6 percent of total local government expenditures between 2005 and 2011. Education was the largest component of local government expenditures, varying between 36.0 percent and 38.4 percent from 2005 to 2011; local governments spent more than 80 percent of total corrections expenditures on correctional institutions such as jails, between 2005 and 2011; and between 2005 and 2011, local governments annually spent over a third (34.4 percent to 37.0 percent) of all funds spent by State and local governments on correctional institutions. Data for this report were obtained from the Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Government Finances for the years 2005-2011. This survey collects expenditure data for Federal, State, and local governments for corrections, police protection, judicial-legal, education, health care/hospitals, highways, public welfare, and other. The financial data for FY2005 through FY2011 were adjusted for inflation to 2011 constant dollars. Tables, figures, and appendixes
