  Annotation: This special report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics presents data on the number of sexual victimizations reported by adult correctional authorities for the period 2009-2011.
Abstract: Highlights of findings from this report on the number of sexual victimizations reported by adult correctional authorities include the following: correctional administrators reported 8,763 allegations of sexual victimization in 2011compared to 8,404 allegations reported in 2010 and 7,855 in 2009; between 2005 and 2011, total allegations of sexual victimization rose from 6,241 to 8,763, with the largest increase occurring in prisons; 10 percent (902) of allegations of sexual victimization were substantiated in 2011; about 52 percent of substantiated incidents of sexual victimization in 2011 involved only inmates, while 48 percent of substantiated incidents involved staff with inmates; about 44 percent of victims of inmate-on-inmate sexual victimization experienced physical force or threat of force, and about 18 percent of substantiated incidents of inmate-on-inmate sexual victimization involved physical injury; and between 2009 and 2011, females represented about 7 percent of all State and Federal prison inmates, but accounted for 22 percent of inmate-on-inmate victims and 33 percent of staff-on-inmate victims. Data for this report came from the Survey of Sexual Violence, conducted annually by the Bureau of Justice Statistics to meet the mandates of the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003. Surveys were completed by correctional administrators in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, State prison systems, public and private jails, private prisons, jails in Indian country, and facilities operated by the U.S. military and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
