Annotation: This report presents 2012 statistical tables on the number of inmates under sentence of death in State and Federal correctional facilities.
Abstract: This report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) presents 2012 statistical tables on the number of inmates under sentence of death in State and Federal correctional facilities. Key findings from this report include the following: at yearend 2012, 3,033 inmates were held under sentence of death in 35 States and the Federal Bureau of Prisons; 4 States held more than half of all death row inmates – California, Texas, Florida, and Pennsylvania; and 56 percent of death row inmates were White and 42 percent were Black, and 98 percent were male and 2 percent were female. Data on criminal history patterns of death row inmates include the following: Black inmates had a higher rate of prior felony conviction (73 percent) compared to Hispanics and Whites, 64 percent and 63 percent respectively; rates of prior homicide conviction were similar for Blacks, Whites, and Hispanics; and a slightly higher percentage of Hispanics and Blacks were on probation or parole at the time of their capital offense, compared to Whites. Additional information is provided on inmates removed from sentence of death, average time between sentencing and execution, number of inmates executed, executions by jurisdiction and method, and number of persons executed by jurisdiction.
