  Annotation: This report identifies commercially available body scanners and discusses the technologies used by these products; technological limitations are noted regarding the types of materials detected and/or the ability to detect contraband inside body cavities.
  Abstract: The study found that of all the technologies examined, only transmission X-ray devices can detect metallic and non-metallic contraband hidden beneath clothing as well as contraband hidden inside body cavities; however, metal-detection technologies do not have the ability to detect non-metallic contraband. Backscatter X-ray, millimeter wave (MMW), and thermal imaging devices are able to detect metallic and non-metallic contraband hidden on a person beneath clothing, but they would not be able to detect contraband hidden inside body cavities. The report’s section on technologies used for body scanning discusses metal detection and types of imaging technologies, which are X-ray screening devices (transmission X-ray and backscatter X-ray), millimeter wave, and thermal conductivity. The contraband screening systems examined are MMW systems (ProVision Imaging, ProVision ATD, and ProVision 2). The transmission X-ray system is RadPro SecurPASS. The Backscatter X-ray devices are Rapiscan Secure 1000 DP, Rapiscan Secure 1000 SP, SmartCheck HT, and SmartCheck. Thermal conductivity devices are the Iscon 1000D Portal, 1000M Mini Portal, and GameChangIR.
