Crime in Maryland decreased 5 percent in 2011 compared to 2010. A total of 195,517 crime incidents were recorded by law enforcement agencies in Maryland in 2011, compared to 204,916 in 2010. Violent crime (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) decreased 9 percent in 2011 compared to 2010. Property crime (breaking or entering, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson) decreased 4 percent from 2010. Arrests, which totaled 263,093 in 2011, decreased 3 percent from 2010. Of the total arrests, 87 percent were adults. Juvenile arrests accounted for 35,510 (13 percent of arrests). Arrests for drug offenses totaled 48,246 in 2011, a 1-percent increase over drug arrests reported in 2010. A total of 21,046 arrests were for driving while intoxicated, a 3-percent decrease for such arrests reported in 2010. In 2011, 2 Maryland law enforcement officers died in the line of duty, and 3,503 Maryland law enforcement officers were assaulted, a 5-percent decrease in similar assaults in 2010. In 2011, there were 2.7 full-time law enforcement officers per 1,000 population.
