OJJDP was established under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act of 1974. Its mandated mission is to provide national leadership, coordination, and resources for preventing and responding to juvenile delinquency and child victimization. This mission is performed through seven organizational components. The Research and Program Development Division administers a comprehensive research agenda that addresses specific problems, monitors trends, and analyzes juvenile justice practices. The Training and Technical Assistance Division strengthens juvenile justice system components by providing training, technical assistance, and state-of-the art information. The Special Emphasis Division provides discretionary funds to public and private nonprofit agencies. The State Relations and Assistance Division manages OJJDP's Formula Grants. The Concentration of Federal Efforts Program promotes interagency cooperation and coordination among Federal agencies with responsibilities in juvenile justice. The Mission and Exploited Children's Program coordinates activities under the Missing Children's Assistance Act. The Information Dissemination Unit collects, publishes, and distributes information concerning OJJDP research and program initiatives.
