This Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) Statistical Tables report describes criminal case processing in the federal justice system, including arrest and booking through sentencing and corrections.
Abstract:
These statistical tables, part of BJS’ Federal Justice Statistics Series, present the number of suspects arrested and booked by the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), suspects in matters investigated and prosecuted by U.S. attorneys, defendants adjudicated and sentenced in U.S. district court, and characteristics of federal prisoners and offenders under federal supervision. Provided are annual data on workload, activities, and outcomes associated with federal criminal cases. Information is acquired on all aspects of processing in the federal justice system, including the number of persons investigated, prosecuted, convicted, incarcerated, sentenced to probation, released pretrial, and under parole or other supervision; initial prosecution decisions, referrals to magistrates, court dispositions, sentencing outcomes, sentence length, and time served. The program collects data from the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys (EOUSA), the Pretrial Services Agency (PSA), the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts (AO), the U.S. Sentencing Commission (USSC), and the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP).

The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) of the U.S. Department of Justice is the principal federal agency responsible for measuring crime, criminal victimization, criminal offenders, victims of crime, correlates of crime, and the operation of criminal and civil justice systems at the federal, state, tribal, and local levels. BJS collects, analyzes, and disseminates reliable and valid statistics on crime and justice systems in the United States, supports improvements to state and local criminal justice information systems, and participates with national and international organizations to develop and recommend national standards for justice statistics. These statistical tables were prepared by the Urban Institute under the supervision of Mark Motivans of BJS. The tables were prepared under BJS grant number 2010-BJ-CX-K079. Principal staff at the Urban Institute were William Adams, Julie Samuels, Barbara Parthasarathy, Kamala Mallik Kane, KeDeuk Kim, Jessica Kelly, and Sybil Mendonca.
