This profile of the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) addresses its data collection requirements and benefits in protecting consumers from fraud and unsafe motor vehicles, as well as keeping stolen vehicles from being resold.
Abstract
Federal law requires that all auto recyclers - including all junk and salvage yards handling more than five cars per year - report the vehicle identification numbers (VINs) of any salvage vehicle, including total loss autos, to the NMVTIS on a monthly basis. Multiple reporting options are available to make reporting possible by all auto recyclers. Each month, information about reporting recyclers is available at www.nmvtis.gov, so that consumers and others know which recyclers are reporting. NMVTIS does not charge a user fee to entities reporting this data; however, some data consolidators may establish limited service charges in order to provide improved or additional services to reporting entities.
