Abstract

This "On-Demand" course is sponsored by the National Institute of Justice's (NIJ's) Forensic Technology Center of Excellence. The course was originally presented at the 2015 Impression, Pattern and Trace Evidence Symposium (IPTES) under the section on Expert Testimony, Forensic Science, Forensic Technology, Impression Pattern Evidence, Law Enforcement Training, and Trace Evidence. The course lasts about 40 minutes, presents a certificate to those who complete the course, and is recommended for forensic practitioners. The course is built around the presenter's (Anthony Graves) experience with the criminal justice system in Texas, which falsely convicted him and sentenced him to death. The course is a case study of the injustice and human suffering that can result "when prosecutors don't follow the rules." Since he was vindicated and released in 2010, largely due to his own and The Innocence Network's efforts, Anthony Graves has spoken at prestigious universities and organizations worldwide, and he testified at the U.S. Senate Judiciary Hearing on Solitary Confinement.
