The Federal Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice (FACJJ) presents the results of a State-by-State survey of juvenile justice initiatives at the State level as reported by State Advisory Groups (SAGs).

|
Abstract: |
The survey solicits input from the States on their actions related to nine juvenile justice issues. On each of these policy matters, respondents are asked to comment on any recent accomplishments in the issue’s domain; any implementation of initiatives relevant to the issue; whether there are plans to address the issue; and whether there are no immediate plans to address the issue. Thirty-four States responded to the survey, and this report provides the response from each of the States on each of the nine juvenile justice issues for which responses were solicited. The nine policy issues are 1) reducing adjudication of youth in adult court through expansion of family/juvenile court jurisdiction; 2) implementation of evidence-based practices (including assessment for risk and/or mental health issues); 3) disproportionate minority youths’ contact with the justice system; 4) truancy; 5) shackling policies; 6) reduce detention of status offenders; 7) confidentiality of juvenile records; 8) reduction of gang activity; and 9) projects related to juvenile justice data sharing. The concluding section of the survey solicits “other comments” from the respondents on any issue. It is the intent of the FACJJ in reporting each of the responding State’s actions on each of these issues that State leaders will benefit from knowledge of what other States are doing in these important areas of juvenile justice.
