This fact sheet describes the components of the Community Based Crime Reduction (CBCR) model for reducing crime, which is administered and funded through the U.S. Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), and results are reported from the implementation of this model in the 74 sites that have received a combined $54.7 million in grants since 2012.

Abstract: |
One component of the CBCR model is its focus on using crime data for the identification of high-crime areas (“hot spots”) and their crime-related features. In designing strategies to counter crime in hot spots, the CBCR model emphasizes partnerships between police, hot-spot residents, and community-based organizations. The CBCR further emphasizes the revitalization of high-crime neighborhoods, so that service gaps, unemployment, barriers to public transportation, and environmental quality are addressed. This broad approach to addressing crime-related factors emphasizes partnerships among individuals and organizations whose resources can assist in hot spot reforms and revitalization. Under the CBCR model, the 74 sites committed to it have experienced dramatic reductions in crime, the building of new houses and businesses in neighborhoods previously deemed unsafe, more collaboration between police and residents, and more effective and efficient deployment of public resources. |
