This report presents the most recent data available (2018) on school crime and student safety, based on information from a variety of data sources, including national surveys of students, teachers, principals, and postsecondary institutions.
Abstract:
This is the 21st in a series of annual publications produced jointly by the National Center for Education Statistics, Institute of Education Sciences in the U.S. Department of Education, and the Bureau of Justice Statistics in the U.S. Department of Justice. Major sections of this report provide data on the use, availability, and perceived harmfulness of opioids among youth; perceptions of bullying among students who reported being bullied; and active-shooter incidents in education settings. Data also cover violent deaths of students at school and away from school; nonfatal student and teacher victimization; school environment; fights, weapons, and illegal substances; fear and avoidance; discipline, safety, and security measures; and postsecondary campus safety and security. Some key preliminary
data indicate that there were 38 school-associated violent deaths from July 1, 2015, through June 30, 2016. In 2017, among students ages 12-18, there were about 827,000 total victimizations at school (theft and nonfatal violent victimization). There were 503,800 victimizations of students off of school grounds. In 2017, about 20 percent of students ages 12-18 reported being bullied at school during the school year. In 2017, about 16 percent of students in grades 9-12 reported that they had carried a weapon, such as a gun, knife, or club anywhere at least 1 day during the previous 30 days, and 4 percent reported carrying a weapon on school property at least 1 day during the previous 30 days.
