The COAP extends its mission beyond resources and funding for grantees to include assistance for all communities confronting the opioid crisis. This assistance includes the publicizing of evidence-based strategies, best practices, and opportunities for building a shared approach for countering the opioid crisis. One major section of the newsletter focuses on protocols for jail opioid detoxification. It presents the detoxification protocols developed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. Both protocols begin with identifying those entering jail who are in withdrawal. Resources are listed that are pertinent to standards, guidelines, and information on withdrawal severity screening. Another major section of the newsletter summarizes and provides access to COAP webinars. Among the topics addressed are the use of web-based motivational assessment strategies, a program example of the power of data and collaboration, the "naloxone plus" solution to reducing overdoses and connecting to treatment, and "digital health technologies" in addressing substance-use disorders. A third major section of the newsletter profiles jail and prison naloxone distribution programs, since one of the highest-risk populations for drug overdose deaths is persons being released from prisons and jails. Another newsletter section focuses on defining and profiling peer support to be provided by individuals with lived experience in addiction recovery and criminal justice involvement. The newsletter also describes pre-criminal intervention programs and descriptions of programs developed by COAP grantees. A listing of annotated resources and funding opportunities is provided.
