THIS PAPER DESCRIBES NEW YORK CITY'S PROPOSED MODEL FOR GROUP INTERVENTION BY PROBATION OFFICERS WITH JUVENILE PROBATIONERS WHICH, IT IS HOPED, WILL AVOID THE HOSTILITY OFTEN ENCOUNTERED AMONG JUVENILES TOWARD GROUP THERAPY.
Abstract
PROBATION OFFICERS ASSIST ONE ANOTHER IN DECIDING UPON COURSE TOPICS AND TEACHING METHODS. TOPICS, SUCH AS SEX EDUCATION, ALCOHOLISM, AND BRINGING UP PARENTS, ARE CHOSEN ON THE BASIS OF RELEVANCE AND INTERESTS. NEGATIVE BEHAVIOR BY THE PARTICIPANTS, SUCH AS ABSENTEEISM, IS NOT PUNISHED, BUT POSITIVE BEHAVIOR IS REWARDED. BY FOCUSING ON THE GROUP EXPERIENCE AS A LEARNING OR EDUCATIONAL ONE, THE CLIENT AND LEADER ARE SAID TO REDUCE THE THREAT AND STIGMA ASSOCIATED WITH THE CONNOTATIONS OF A MEDICAL MODEL OF GROUP THERAPY.
